We will remember them... |
|
The Kings German Legion have close links with Harwich in Essex following the distasterous expedition to Walcheren in Holland during 1808-1810. Troops from both the KGL and British forces caught a type of marsh-fever or malaria which became known as "Walcheren Fever", and many soldiers died whilst still abroad. However, many troops were shipped home and their port of entry into the UK was Harwich. The residents of Harwich and neighbouring Dovercourt took the soldiers in and nursed some back to health, although unfortunately many of them died. Quite a number were buried in the graveyard at All Saints Church, Dovercourt. |

IN MEMORIAM KING’S GERMAN LEGION THROUGHOUT THE AGES WHO FOUGHT AND DIED THAT OTHERS MAY LIVE IN PEACE *** YOUR MEMORY LIVES ON IN US |
The Vicar of All Saints Church read a short eulogy and the re-enactors fired a volley over the grave. "The Last Post" was then played by a Bugler from the 9th East Norfolk Regiment of Foot, which brought a tear to many an eye. This took place following the Sunday service, and many of the local congregation stayed behind to join in our remembrance, which was very moving for all attending. We hope to repeat this tribute to those whose lives we try to recreate regularly. We are also hoping to take over the upkeep of the grave. |
